Ponds and Lakes of the White Mountains:Wayside to Wilderness
Ponds and lakes are some of the gems of back-country hiking. In this book Steven Smith has done an excellent job describing how to get to these aquatic treasures in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Detailed descriptions are given for access and trails. Interesting and useful information is also provided on the lakes and ponds themselves. This includes the elevation, depth, and activities available at the lakes such as fishing, swimming, and birding. Notes on the natural history are intermingled with the text in a way that lets one visualize the tranquility of these aquatic habitats even from afar. Simple trail maps with key geographic features are also provided in many cases. If you hike the White Mountains, and if you enjoy lakes and ponds, this book is a must.

Pontiac and the Indian Uprising (Great Lakes Books)
Published in Paperback by Wayne State Univ Pr (T) (February, 1994)
Author: Howard Henry Peckham
Average review score:

Wonderful Piece
For a shorter paperback work, this was a most impressive piece. Not only was the author complete in his explanation of Pontiac's War, but also gave all points of view. Many times Pontiac's own words were translated to get the effect of the messages he was trying to relay. It was very detailed in explaining The Ottawa Chief's influence over many tribes, including the western tribes of Illinois. He almost singlehandedly destroyed the English western frontier of the Great Lakes, Unfortunately as readers know, logistics win wars, and his lack of supplies did him in. The book also touched on many roles key English officers and civilians played in the developing peace, and also what role the French continued to play even after their defeat in the French and Indian War. Pontiac's defeat was the beginning of the end of the Native Americans control of this land, as sad as it is. Enjoy this wonderful book.

seeing portland, maine as it was
This is a wonderful book full of old pictures and trivia about Portland, Maine. Portland is the largest city in the state. If you have lived there or visited, the pictures and history are very thought provoking. So often, we don't stop in our busy lives to look back at the history of an area. Here, all of the legwork is done for us. Definitely a very interesting book for those with interest in the history of this old seaport city.

Brings the Outer Cape to light
I was blown away with the quality and breadth of the images in this unusual photo essay book. I love both Provincetown and photography, so you can imagine my excitement in discovering the book on Amazon.

Fields seems to have a knack for capturing the subtle and beautiful Cape light many artists and tourists flock to see. Surprisingly, he also has a fair number of fun and stunning portraits in the collection.

I would recommend thia book for anyone who loves photography or the Cape. It's also an easy and obvious gift selection for my friends.

Quabbin: A History and Explorers Guide
Published in Paperback by On Cape Publications (June, 2002)
Author: Michael Tougias
Average review score:

A guidebook for historians and nature-lovers in western Mass
If the name "Quabbin" is unfamiliar to you, then you're probably not from Massachusetts. This 18-mile-long reservoir was created in the late 1930s and early 1940s when the Swift River Valley in western Mass. was deliberately flooded. The goal of the project was to provide water to Boston and to other selected cities in the commonwealth, which the reservoir still does today. Four towns were lost in the process, however, and a certain historical mystique still surrounds those communities. Here journalist-naturalist Michael Tougias takes us on a tour of the region with stories and scenes from yesterday and today. We learn of the history of the region, the activities of the Metropolitan District Water Supply Commission, who the "woodpeckers" were, and the displacement of residents of Prescott, Enfield, Greenwich, and Dana. Quabbin's magic continues in its gradual acceptance and promotion as a natural resource and recreational area. Today a bald eagle may fly over you as you proceed along a hiking trail or traverse the length of Winsor Dam. At the water's edge, you might startle a feeding moose or hear a loon call to its mate. Take Tougias' book along, and you'll know which of the 55 gates you'll want to use and what you'll see when you get there. Neighboring towns offer unique diversions as well, and the author provides lists and notes for wanderers exploring the area on foot, on bicycle, or by car. Quabbin's beauty can be breathtaking; reading and consulting this book will further your appreciation of the place. A must-buy for New England libraries and for any weekend adventurer.
